Located off Purchase Street in the heart of Westchester’
Rich in history, the original 50-acre parcel was originally owned by Harry S. Black, president and significant stock holder in the New York City based United States Realty and Construction Company. Mr. Black, who broke ground on his country home in 1904, had commissioned architect Bruce Price to design the grand Manor House. Price was well underway with the home’s design when he came to his untimely death in 1903. Price who designed the homes and layout of Tuxedo Park, a famous vacation community in Orange County, NY also designed the Château Frontenac hotel in Quebec as well as the Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta. His daughter Emily Price Post, was the famed author of books on etiquette.
In 1914 Oscar S. Straus purchased the country estate from Mr. Black. Oscar Straus served as U.S. Ambassador to Turkey from 1887-1889 and was a member of the Straus family that operated R.H. Macy & Co. His brother, Isidor Straus, built the Macy’s department store chain and served in Congress. Isidor Straus perished along with his wife Ida in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Oscar and his wife Sarah (Sar-Osca, hence “Sarosca Farm”) enjoyed the country estate for many years and it remained in the Straus family until Roger Straus, grandson of Oscar and Sarah sold the property to the developers in 2007.
The Manor House, which has been completely renovated, is now situated on approximately four acres and features rich architectural detail and charm with a handsome stucco and half timbered façade enhanced by a tree-lined forecourt. It has generously proportioned formal rooms enriched with rich hardwood floors, period moldings and six wood-burning fireplaces. The home has a new in-ground pool with formal fountains and expansive terraces for grand entertaining.
The Manor House includes a master bedroom suite with sleeping porch, five family bedrooms and baths, au-pair suite, expansive gourmet kitchen with family room, mud room and a three-car detached garage. The Manor House is currently being marketed by Houlihan Lawrence Rye Office. The selling price is $4,995,000.
