Whenever I think about brushing my hair, I think about Marcia Brady sitting with her brush, brushing her way to 100. I just can't help myself! Brushing your hair is an important part of your beauty routine because it stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, it removes dirt and product buildup from your hair and it gives your hair shine! We at Curl Salon are going to give you a few brushing pointers to keep your tresses clean, healthy, and shiny!
One hundred strokes of your hair brush can be excessive. Just be sure to brush from scalp to ends; it may be easier to do this in sections to be sure that each part of your scalp gets touched by the brush. Brush along your hair line and flip your hair over to get the back of your head. Since a thorough brushing can loosen oil and dandruff from the scalp, the best time to brush is before you shower or wash your hair. If not you hair can look greasy or flaky. And those of us who have curly hair may look a little bit frizzy. Always use a good brush that has a combination of boar and nylon bristles to add shine and manageability to your locks.
For you chemically treated gals, don't ever brush before a chemical service or if your scalp is irritated. Brushing can cause a mild scalp irritation and this can be exacerbated by chemicals. If you are going to get a single or double process haircolor, highlights, any type of relaxer, or even semi or temporary haircolor, don't brush beforehand. It's best to wait until the next time you wash your hair. If a shampoo is recommended, such as with a perm, no brushing, just a gentle shampoo to avoid irritating your scalp. We strongly recommend that all of these chemical processes be done by a licensed professional, a Stylist from CurlSalon.com, for example.
Ladies if you didn't know this tidbit, NEVER, EVER brush your hair when it's wet. Only brush dry hair. Wet hair is extremely fragile; brushing while wet can cause excess breakage and damage to your hair. To detangle your hair, use a comb with widely spaced teeth while hair is damp. If your prefer to detangle in the shower, leave a little conditioner in your hair while you comb with a wide tooth comb.
So remember, brush your hair thoroughly before a shampoo, not before a chemical service, and never brush your hair while it's wet. Have any hair questions, contact a CurlSalon.com Stylist.
