Our reading programs are based on authoritative research in the field, providing a balance of systematic phonics instruction and reading books. We crafted the scope and sequence of our programs with the guidance of reading specialists and teachers. Individual Pacing
Part of what makes Hooked on Phonics programs so successful is our commitment to meeting students' individual needs. This curriculum is adaptable to accommodate students learning at different speeds. Feel free to tailor it to fit the needs and pacing of your students.
Reading Aloud
We recommend that students using the programs say each word out loud and practice oral reading when reading the stories and books. This not only reinforces their learning but also helps you assess mastery of the skills in the lessons.
Mastery
It's very important that students master each lesson before moving on. Each new lesson builds on the skills learned in the previous ones. Giving students the time and tools needed to master each lesson is key to achieving the greatest benefit from the program.

I started my daughter Katie on the program when she turned three last May. Yesterday she turned four, and after using program just once or twice a week for the past year, she now reads better than most first- or second-graders!
More importantly, Katie loves the program.... I have to discourage people from calling our house between 8-8:30 a.m., since that is our time, and Katie gets very upset if we miss our HOP time!
And she was so excited when she finished the Level 1 kit and moved on to Level 2 — we had to have a mini-celebration to mark the occasion!
Katie is now working her way through Level 2 and based upon the results we've seen so far, I have no doubt she'll be reading at a second- or third-grade level before she even starts kindergarten!
