PRLog (Press Release) - Jul 09, 2009 -
A series of historic pictures have been unveiled to herald the 200th anniversary of Bristol’s historic Floating Harbour.

Built to maintain a constant water level in the city, the Floating Harbour has enjoyed a varied history since it was completed back in 1809. The pictures are located throughout the Harbour, including Crest Nicholson’s Harbourside development and the new harbour inlet.

Supporting the exhibition is Crest Nicholson Regeneration which is currently transforming the area formerly known as Canons Marsh into apartments, shops and office space.

The first of the images have now been positioned throughout the development where people can wander round and see for themselves what the area used to look like when it was a working dock.

The location of each image has been placed where the original picture was either taken or shows how the location the person is standing in used to look.

Included in the series of historic pictures is an aerial view which can be found near Pizza Express, a picture of former Port Master Mr Harris who is standing by rail buffers and capstan which still exist today on Harbourside Walk and a picture on Cathedral Walk which shows cars being prepared for export.

Other images can be found at the new Harbour Inlet and include a picture of the original ferry with the occupants breaking ice on the water as it crosses from the SS Great Britain side.

Forming part of a much wider exhibition that is set to go on for at least the next six months over 100 images have been placed in position by the Floating Harbour 200 committee.

Vicky Dudbridge from selling agent King Sturge said: “The Floating Harbour has played perhaps one of the most important roles in the history of Bristol and we’re delighted to give people an idea of what life was like through these pictures.

“We want as many people as possible to come and have a look and to see how it has transformed over the years.”

For further information on the development please call 0117 908 8888 or visit http://www.harbourside.co.uk . Alternatively please visit the marketing suite on Cathedral Walk which is open daily from 10am to 5pm.
