Islamabad: Among the 9 separate category nominations, SAMAA TV won 5 awards, when the Ministry of Health in partnership with UNICEF announced the winners of its 1st National Media Awards 2009 at an award ceremony. The awards consisted of 15 different categories.
Pakistan’s leading private satellite news and current affairs television channel SAMAA TV, came away with honors for Best Reports Live Events; Most Breaking News; Best Report Electronic Media in Urdu language. The winners were Mr. Abdul Rehman, Mr. Tariq Waheed and Mr. Hasan Nasir Khan. Tariq Waheed received two prizes for Best Report Electronic Urdu and for Most Breaking News in a year.
Mr. Amir Jahangir, Chief Executive Officer of SAMAA TV received a special award for Innovations in Health Journalism. Mr. Jahangir is known for being a media person carrying out health related initiatives to improve the overall health indicators of Pakistan; the special award was presented for his contribution and efforts towards the eradication of polio across Pakistan by creating the Polio Control Cell in Pakistan, which has more than 15 media entities as partners now.
Federal Minister for Health Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani presented the awards for the 1st National Media Awards 2009. The winning entries were selected by an independent jury.
