What separated Jackson from the average addict is his celebrity status and money. His position and power afforded him a higher level of enabler. “We saw this exact same relationship between enabler and addict with Anna Nicole Smith. Her enabling doctors were prescribing copious amounts of opiate pain killers without even as little as an exam” says Giordano who provided CNN with Smith updates from the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Giordano also points to media reports as further evidence of a doctor’s involvement in Jackson’s overdose. According to the NY Post, just days after his death, reports indicated that Jackson took a daily cocktail of Demerol, Vistaril, Soma, Dilaudid, Vicodin, Zoloft, Prilosec, Paxil and Xanax. According to Giordano: “this lethal combination could kill an elephant. It would be next to impossible for anyone to secure this amount of prescription drugs without the cooperation of a physician.”
The unfortunate reality about the King of Pop’s death and other’s like him is that they were all completely avoidable. The same doctors who are prescribing the opiate pain killers only receive one hour of addiction education a year. As many as ten-percent of these doctors are themselves addicted to prescription pain medication.
If there is anything good to come out of this, it is that Michael Jackson has put a face on prescription drug addiction. Perhaps now, those who are addicted to prescription pain killers will realize the life-threatening danger they are in and seek help. Additionally, Giordano is challenging the pharmaceutical and medical industry to stand-up and do something about the proliferation of prescription pain killers on America’s streets.
