The principal international scientific organization studying the nature of consciousness, the Parapsychological Association (PA), will hold its 52nd annual meeting in Seattle, at the University of Washington, August 6th through the 9th. An affiliate of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, members of the PA are engaged in the study of psi (or ‘psychic’) experiences, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, psychic healing, and precognition.
For three days, the leadings scientists and scholars from universities and institutions around the world will gather to present the latest research findings in this sometimes controversial but always fascinating aspect of human consciousness, beginning with a panel "Psi, Soul, and Presently Known Laws of Physics". Other panels will cover "Paranormal Healing and Medical Diagnosis", and "The Phenomenology of the Out-of-Body Experience."
Donald Hoffman, PhD, Professor of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, will be the keynote speaker Saturday night. His talk, "Consciousness and the Interface Theory of Perception" will present a non-materialist solution to the mind-body problem. Other notable speakers include Dr. Charles Tart, and internationally known psychologist and author of over 15 books on parapsychology and altered states of consciousness, and Dr. Dean Radin, work renowned author, lecturer and senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences.
The convention, which is open to the public, will offer a rare opportunity for those in the Seattle area interested in that wide range of human functioning popularly known as the psychic or spiritual to hear the latest and most advanced scientific thinking about topics in parapsychology that are hugely popular but whose discussion in some quarters is all too often clouded by ungrounded speculation and extravagant claims.
