1. .M4v is used in Apple iTunes and iPod. it's the format iTunes uses to distribute its video content.
2. .M4V is basically a .mp4 file with the attached DRM, and can be renamed to MP4 file extension.
MP4 is a container format. As any other container format like AVI (.avi), RealMedia (.rm, .rmvb), QuickTime (.mov), MPEG (.mpg, .mpeg), Matroska (.mkv, .mka), OGM (.ogm) it allows you to combine different multimedia streams (mostly audio and video) into one single file. And .m4v is .mp4 files with the WRONG extension introduced by Apple for video+audio.
Part 2. How to play M4V files
You can play the new m4v file with iTunes. and .m4v file must be renamed to .mp4 before you play it.
1. Choose file > Add File to Library, or file > Import. Select the renamed file you want to play.
2. Open the playlist named "recently added" and double click the file.
Part 3.Convert M4V to AVI, MPEG, WMV, MP3, etc with M4V Converter
M4V just can be used on itunes and ipod, in other words, iTunes purchased M4V Video have DRM protection which prevent users from converting it to other formats or playing iTunes media with other incompatible players such as PSP, Zune, Creative Zen, etc.
So if you want to play itunes M4V on Windows media player and other portable players, import m4v files to windows movie maker, share itunes m4v video with your friends, you need to remove drm from m4v and convert protected m4v files first
