The school holidays are here which means more people will be using the UK’s road network. On the back of this, leading car hire website Carrentals.co.uk has surveyed drivers and found that 1 in 6 drivers like the idea of having an extramarital affair at a motorway services this summer, while 1 in 20 admit that they have done previously.

The survey was commissioned by leading car hire site Carrentals.co.uk and took in the views of over 2,300 drivers. The survey revealed that people’s chief complaints with service stations were expensive foods and cleanliness. However the poll revealed that many drivers fancy having an illicit romantic encounter when at a motorway services.

Midlands and North West areas of the UK were the locations where people most want to try a fling at a service station, with London and South East next. People aged between 36 and 45 are most likely to try an extramarital affair.

Gareth Robinson, managing director of car hire site Carrentals.co.uk, said: “Our poll revealed some surprising results – we expected people to complain about prices but the illicit affairs statistics were pretty shocking!”

Costly prices on food and drink were the chief criticism of motorway services, with 60% of drivers claiming that they are too expensive. Cleanliness of toilets also ranked high, with 1 in 5 saying that they’re too dirty. People also said that food is not of a high enough standard.

More than 50% of people polled say that they spend between £26 and £50 on each visit to a service station but that they also spend more should they have their children with them. Women spend more than men do, with 60% admitting that they spend more money on the kids after they’ve already bought petrol.

Gareth Robinson continued: “Lots of tourists are staying the UK this year because of the financial landscape – so more people on the motorways. Prices for food and drink at services are high, so it’s a good idea to buy them before you start your journey.”
