A local computer consulting firm, Concise Computer Consulting of Bloomfield Hills, has noticed an increased rate of virus and malware infections from its clients in recent months. The uptick, they explain, has been caused by several factors, including:
- Vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows Operating System
- Clicking on e-mails from suspicious sources and opening attachments
- Visiting web sites which claim to offer "free" software, music or video downloads
- File sharing web sites or programs
While the firm was created to help small businesses with various technological needs such as On-site and remote computer repair, Data and disaster recovery, Tutoring and training, and Data backup solutions, the firm has been focusing more manpower and efforts lately responding to client demand for anti-virus and anti-spyware protection.
Some clients even paid for programs which claimed to be anti-virus software, but which was actually the opposite, software that monitors keystrokes (everything that is typed on one's computer) and uses one's personal information to steal their identity.
"When this happens", technicians at Concise explained, "We advise the client to immediately call their credit card company to dispute the charge, and we initiate a full clean-up of their computer with a host of free utilities."
In addition to cleaning off viruses and malware, Concise also teaches clients how to remove unnecessary temporary internet files, how to defragment their hard drives, and other useful processes which keep computers running optimally.
