"Although Burger King has always been a major player in the fast food game they have always lagged behind the likes of McDonalds and KFC in terms of brand ability, but one thing they have managed to very well over the years is produce viral content..."

The first bit of viral content I saw come from the Burger King camp was SubservientChicken.com. This is where they paid someone to dress up like a chicken and record themselves doing hundreds and hundreds of things, you could them type 'orders' into the chat box and it would look like the chicken-man was following your commands. It was pretty impressive stuff, and they seemed to have bothered recording 90% of the things you thought to search for. The campaign worked brilliantly! The website spread across the Internet like wildfire and found it's way on to the monitors of thousands and thousands of potential customers. But this was definitely not the last piece of viral marketing they produced...

It is 2007 and yes, The Simpson's movie is drawing ever closer, the stream of endless hype is managing to generate huge amounts of exposure from the internet and who better to exploit that opportunity than Burger King? OK, it's not really 2007, I'm talking in the past tense... In 2007 Burger King released SimpsonizeMe.com, a site which allows you to upload a picture of yourself and automatically turn yourself into a Simpson's cartoon character! As you can imagine this was a huge success. Viral marketing campaigns are part of the reason why Burger King upholds it's popularity among the fast food crowd.

Plenty of other companies have followed on this trend of turning yourself into a cartoon, most notably Zwinky. They provide a similar service at http://www.turnyourselfintoacartoon.com which is a hugely popular service among teens.

Burger King, however, has also been in the news recently for less honorable reasons. Their new advert (read about it here http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,529576,00.html?mep) has been criticized of containing a 'blatant sexual innuendo'. Personally, I think it's just another effective but shady viral marketing campaign. Hey, any press is good press right?
