A Coventry environment charity is aiming to help people prevent climate change and enjoy themselves in the process.

The London Organising Committee for the 2012 Games (LOCOG) has announced the launch of Team Green Britain on July 10 (Friday). The scheme, sponsored by EDF Energy, aims to use the London 2012 Games to inspire people to become more environmentally friendly.

To celebrate the launch The Living Environment Trust is introducing a Recycle to Cycle promotion at the Alan Higgs Centre, on Allard Way, from the July 10 until August 10.

During that time the charity will issue vouchers for a free month in the gym, and the following two months at concessionary rate, to people who bring in 12kg or more of recycling material, such as glass, cans and paper.

The charity will also be hosting a special Community Environment Day on July 11.

The event will aim to raise awareness on issues relating to the natural environment and sustainability while providing a variety of fun environmental and sporting activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.

On the day, which will run between 11am and 4pm, children can experience a variety of activities including duck racing, falconry, pond dipping, wildlife workshops, canal boat trips, football and hook a duck.

There is no need to book in advance but a small charge may apply for certain activities.

Raffaella Tentindo, from The Living Environment Trust, said: “All eyes will be on the Olympic and Paralympic Games as we edge closer to 2012, so what better way than to use the Games as a tool to effect positive change.

“We hope that the Community Environment Day and the Recycle to Cycle Scheme will help to show that saving the environment has real benefits and need not be a chore.

“It is also important to promote a link between an environmentally friendly lifestyle and a healthier lifestyle and we would encourage as many people as possible to visit the Alan Higgs Centre and get involved.”

Tom Clift, Coventry and Warwickshire partnership manager for the 2012 Games, said: “It is great to see local organisations supporting the Team Green Britain scheme.

“This is a good example of how the region can be inspired by London 2012 and support one of London’s bid promises to make 2012 the greenest Games ever.

“It also shows that the London 2012 Olympics are more than just about sport and can and engage everyone outside of London.”
