“Her meteoric rise in the world of fashion has echoed her husband in the world of politics,” said council President Diane von Furstenberg.
Diane von Furstenberg said that Michelle Obama had a unique look that balanced the duality of her lives’ in her roles as adviser to her husband, President Barack Obama, and mother to their two daughters.
Although she was not able to attend the awards gala, her presence was felt. She accepted her award via a pre-taped video speech.
“This past year has been an extraordinary time for me,” Obama said. “On behalf of women everywhere, I want to thank you for making fashion liberating, inspiring, but most of all, fun.”
Many celebrities in the fields of film, fashion, music… also joined the event, to honor the individuals and organizations who had a great contribution to the American fashion, including Blake Lively, Kerry Washington, Ashley Olsen, Claire Danes and Heidi Klum.
Jason Wu, who made her inaugural ball gown, and Thakoon Panichgul, whom she has worn several times were nominated for the coveted Swarovski Emerging Talent Award (the prize went to risktaker Alexander Wang).
And Narciso Rodriguez, whose creations are in constant rotation in Obama’s closet, was a nominee for Womenswear Designer of the Year – the night’s biggest honor.fr
