Limerick County Council has selected community groups in Glin, Broadford and Bruff to participate in the All-Ireland competition, which aims to recognise and celebrate the vital contributions that community groups make to society. Judging for “Pride of Place 2009” will take place in County Limerick on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st July, while the awards will be presented this November. The County will once again be hoping to achieve national recognition in a competition that last year saw Cappamore being named one of the principal winners.
According to Cllr. David Naughton, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council: “The performance of Limerick’s participants in previous years is evidence of the depth and breadth of voluntary activity underway in communities across the county. Limerick County Council is pleased to have worked closely with this year’s entrants, and wishes them the best of luck in achieving national recognition for their respective communities.”

The winners in each competition category will receive an exclusive crystal decorative memento, along with a cheque for €2,000. Runners up will receive a framed certificate and a cheque for €500.00, while the recipients of special awards receive a crystal memento.
“County Limerick’s success in the competition, to date, is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when the Local Authority and the local community work together”, explained Ms. Josephine Cotter Coughlan, Director of Services.
Commenting on the benefits of taking part in Pride of Place, Ms. Cotter Coughlan stated: “This competition focuses on local communities, both north and south of the border, coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their area. Groups have the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and learn from others and further promote their activities. There is no doubt that local communities that have participated in the past have benefited greatly from their experiences. It has provided them with an excellent opportunity to highlight the elements of their areas that they have civic pride in, and gave them a platform to showcase the work they are doing on a continual basis.”
