SAN FRANCISCO --- TechWeb’s Dr. Dobb’s, in association with Microsoft Visual Studio, announced the winners of the Dr. Dobb’s Challenge Deuce (DobbsChallenge2.com)
WINNERS
The entry judged Best Game was “Block Rogue” by Stan Patton and stood out to judges particularly because it is one of the first hybrids of a roguelike and a puzzle game, all but defining a new genre of playable online games. The winners of the other four main categories were similarly impressive; contest organizer Mathew Kumar noted that “The results of the Challenge showcase how much can be done by keen software developers, given half a chance.”
The winners of the Dr. Dobb’s Challenge Deuce are:
1) Best Game - “Block Rogue” by Stan Patton: $2,000
The biggest prize went to one of the first hybrids of a roguelike and a puzzle game. Patton created an overhead block-moving game in an entirely new genre.
2) Best Total Conversion - “Dot Killer” by Kevin Bacha: $1,000
This total conversion modified the original platform game and transformed it into an overhead shooter game. The fast-paced game uses both the keyboard and the mouse and is surprisingly playable.
3) Best Game Starring Dr. Dobb's And The Defy All Challenges Crew - “Dobbs Explorer” by Georg Rottensteiner:
Rottensteiner is a Challenge veteran, as he won this category in the 2008 competition. His game uses many of the original game assets but transforms the game into a Zelda-like dungeon explorer.
4) Best One Button Game - “Shinguru the Ninja” by Mattias Thell: $1,000
This game makes use of only the space bar while still allowing players to perform creative ninja-like moves. Thell creatively designed a fantastic control system in a difficult category.
5) Race-to-

COMPETITION
Challenge entrants were able to participate in two different competitions, the first being an in-browser level creation competition and the second a full mod of the original source code. The in-browser level creation was meant to appeal to a wider audience as it required no downloads or coding. Nearly 300 new levels were submitted, the best winning Dr. Dobbs bobble heads and cash in weekly and monthly judging.
For the full modding competition contestants downloaded a specially created Silverlight-
