Metro Boston Firefighters Battle Out Their Culinary Skills

Metro Boston Firefighters will heat things up at Fenway Park as they sample their famous firehouse recipes to support and raise funds for the Boston Firefighter’s Local 718 Burn Foundation (BFFBF), the nonprofit that eases the suffering and hardship of burn victims and their families.

Over 400 guests and honorary committee members are expected to attend the event On July 18, 2009, from 4:00-8:00 PM, while sampling and judging recipes from 20 firefighter teams. AGAR, New England’s largest independent food distributor, as well as Perdue Chicken and Cabot Cheese are generously donating all of the fresh ingredients. Awards will be given in this friendly competition from both the general attendees and the expert judge panel, consisting of community leaders such as, Councilman John Tobin, Dr. Robert Sheridan (Shriners Hospitals for Children), Kelley Tuthill (WCVB), Chef Jeffrey Merry (AGAR), Lyndon Byers (WAAF & Former Bruin), Michele McPhee (WTKK), Lynne Viera (How2Heroes), Hank Morse (WTKK/WROR), Frances Rivera (WHDH), Barry Nolan (Former TV Presenter) and Ed Kelly (Local 718 President).

“The Firefighter Cook-Off,” according to Steve Turley, the BFFBF Director and Co-Founder, “is a fantastic opportunity for the BFFBF to raise desperately-needed funds, while engaging the public and having a memorable time doing so.” All of the proceeds from the evening will directly impact the Boston Firefighter’s Burn Foundation so that the organization can establish greater funding for burn victim’s families during emergencies, temporary housing, meals, transportation and support.

The Boston Firefighter’s Local 718 Burn Foundation was founded by local firefighters joined together with the desire to continue their aid, and do much more for those whom they rescued and transported to regional Burn Centers. The Foundation is 100% volunteer-based, and with the guidance of Massachusetts General Hospital, Shiners Burn Hospital in Boston, Brigham and Women's' Hospital, and other local Burn Centers, the BFFBF helps victims and their families through the transitional period that follows the hospital stay and often lengthy recovery period.  

The fundraiser will also include live music from the Boston Gaelic Fire Brigade Pipes & Drums and Boston-based Irish band, The Finean Sons.
