Kampala, Uganda-A team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers offered their help to the youth of Uganda with a series of seminars at Makerere University.
Although poverty in Uganda has declined rapidly in the past decade, a 2006 survey found 31 percent of the population continues to live below the poverty line.
Six Scientology Volunteer Ministers decided to do something effective about this at the annual youth camp meeting in Kampala. Using the Scientology Handbook based on the works of Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard as their textbook, these volunteers helped the students at the youth camp accomplish their educational and career goals with seminars on the technology of study and the basics of organizing. Students were also told of the free online courses the available through the Scientology Volunteer Ministers web site at http://www.volunteerministers.org.
Well-known for disaster relief and emergency response actions, and for what has become known as “spiritual first aid,” teams of Scientology Volunteer Ministers provide help in any form needed. Scientology churches and missions organize teams of Scientology Volunteer Ministers who reach out to help people in their own communities, and Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tours bring help to remote locations. But this team of volunteers in Kampala, Uganda, far from any Scientology church or mission, acting on their own initiative, are an example of the true grassroots nature of the activity.
