A recently launched computer company, Lanslide Gaming PCs (http://www.lanslidepcs.com), is giving the gaming computer industry something new to think about. The company is based around the idea that gaming desktops should be portable and caters to LAN-party enthusiasts. LAN-parties are events where groups of gamers pack up their computers and gather for large gaming sessions. These gaming events have become increasingly popular as the PC gaming industry has grown to provide more multiplayer-themed video games.

The company was founded by a group of college students "sick of moving around [their] humongous gaming desktops." According to one of the founders, "We got the idea when one of us was hurt trying to move a solid steel case up the stairs. We figured there had to be a better way to do this. We couldn't afford to buy $3,000 gaming laptops, so we started Lanslide."

All of Lanslide's computer systems are built around the idea of portability. To achieve this, the computers are built into compact, light-weight aluminum cases, with a fully loaded system weighing in at around 15 pounds. The cases also sport a carrying handle, allowing them to be carried at one's side, like a briefcase. This offers a substantial mobility improvement over traditional gaming desktops, which are generally both heavy and bulky.

Using compact cases goes a long way towards making Lanslide desktops more portable, but what about all of the items you need to run a desktop? Lanslide's solution: put them on your back. All of their computers come with a patented carrying case they call a PC-Pack. It has a specially designed compartment to hold and protect up to a 20 inch monitor, plus ample room for a keyboard, mouse, and headset or speaker system. "I'm not going to kid you," said the company's spokesperson, "It may not be the most profound fashion statement [due to its size], but for the ten minutes you'll wear it [to move a computer], you'll be really glad you have one."

Many companies have created laptops to fill the portable gaming niche, but the consensus amongst many gamers is that laptops just don't cut it.  Laptop components are significantly more expensive than their desktop counterparts, making high-end laptops expensive to produce. Another drawback to laptop components is their lack of upgradability. Gaming laptops often use motherboards with on-board graphics cards and processors.  Since game producers design around the latest desktop hardware, gaming laptops frequently trail behind in performance. When the latest video cards come out, laptop owners have to buy entirely new laptops to keep up.

Lanslide's portable gaming desktops have some major advantages over gaming laptops. All of their gaming computers are made from standard desktop parts. This means that they are substantially more affordable than equivalent laptops. Part for part, you get a lot more performance for your money. Lanslide's desktops also have large, independent power supplies, which means that when it's time to upgrade to a new power-hungry video card or processor, you won't be power limited.

The company is also very price competitive with other gaming desktops, with respectable gaming rigs starting at around $600. So the next time you're in the market for a new desktop, you might want to consider one that's portable.
