As buses pulled away from shopping center parking lots and highway rest stops this morning, an annual summer ritual begins. Full-season and first-session campers piled on with duffel bags and tennis racquets and headed to camp for jam-packed weeks of non-stop activity, friends and fun.
Many parents, however, held off on the decision to send their child to camp this summer based on the economic, and, for many, personal uncertainty. But now that summer is here, some parents are finding the weeks ahead a blank slate with lots of time for idle children to fill. In some cases, children who seemed unready for overnight camp just a few short months ago are now begging to go.
CampGroup’s fifteen summer camps as a whole have weathered the economic downturn well, with only a 2-3% decrease in enrollment overall. However, the camps have definitely seen a surge in last minute enrollments.
“We signed up five new campers less than a week before camp started.” Said Josh Cohen, Director of Camp Cobbossee for boys in Maine. “Whereas normally calls this time of year are about next summer, we are still getting inquiries for second session.”
Some of the three and four week camps, such as Camp Cobbossee and the sister camp, Camp Kippewa in Maine and Camp Mah-Kee-Nac in Massachusetts, do have limited openings for the second session, beginning late July. In New Hampshire, Camp Wicosuta and Camp Walt Whitman may have availability depending on age group.
