How long will Macrolane last?
The most important fact to remember about Macrolane is that the results are not permanent. Injected material is eventually absorbed by the body. In some individuals, the results may last about 12 months; in others, the results may be maintained longer. Macrolane is topped up every year with roughly half the volume that is injected initially. Most people would have 200mls in the first treatment thus have a 100ml top up in 12 months. They would then have a longer period before the next top up, say 14 months and so on.
Does Macrolane hurt?
The doctor will numb the area with a local anaesthetic before injecting Macrolane, for nervous patients Entonox (laughing gas) or valium can be used. The first time you have Macrolane you may a tugging senstaion as the product is injected due to the underlying muscle and overlying skin stretching a little. After your initial treatment any top up injections are more or less painless.
Are there any side effects?
Common injection-related reactions might occur including, erythema, swelling, tenderness, pain, bruising or itching at the injection site. The area treated may also feel hard with some possible lumpiness for a few weeks. There is a small risk of infections and a course of antibiotics will be prescribed after treatment.

The doctor will discuss with you exactly where you would like to have the product applied, then he will inject some local aneasthetic into and around the area to which you are having the treatment, to numb the area. Using a syringe, the surgeon will inject the macrolane into the specific areas required. The treatment will take around 30 mins. You can return to normal activities immediately after your treatment, however you will be slightly numb for a few hours until the local anaesthetic wears off.
