The NHTSA has another new name for Cash for Clunkers, Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS. A new website, cars.gov was launched in an attempt to define the rules and provisions of the new program within 30 days. The bill goes into effect July 1st.
The cars.gov website was set up for consumers to provide basic information on the Car Allowance Rebate System (formerly Cash for Clunkers, formerly Cash for Guzzlers). Car dealers will also need to access the new website to register their participation here.

According to Brian Pasch, CEO of PCG, the new website launched by the NHTSA still leaves many pressing questions unanswered. Pasch says, “Consumers are sending in hundreds of email questions every day and the range of questions show just how little clarity there is on the scope of the bill.” The most important question on most consumers’ minds, according to Pasch, is whether or not the government will take into effect EPA estimates for older, depreciated cars.
“Many consumers indicated to us that the EPA estimates listed on fueleconomy.gov are not accurate estimates. For much older cars, 10-20 years old, the mileage estimates are outdated and inaccurate. Every day wear and tear has decreased the fuel efficiency of these cars and consumers want to know if the government will take that into consideration when handing out vouchers,” said Pasch.
