With respect to Iran and their freedom, we here at Curl Salon are going to give some tips on caring for Middle Eastern hair. Women from the Middle East are often the first victims of oppressive laws and also of violence, according to Azar Nafisi, author of Things I’ve Been Silent About, and Reading Loilta in Tehran. Nafisi was expelled from the University of Tehran in 1981 for refusing to wear a hair wrap.
Today, we are going to dedicate this article to Neda, a young girl who was killed in Tehran, Iran on July 20, 2009. She was killed by police for using her only weapon, her voice. She represents a symbol of freedom during a violent conflict between a government and peaceful protesters.
According to studies, Middle Eastern women spend the most amount of time on their hair. This is mostly due to the differences in hair texture. Middle Eastern hair is one of thickest and most coarse of all the ethnic groups. It is also very silky, dark, and heavy which can make it difficult to maintain.
A good rule of thumb when caring for this hair type is to use products that will smooth the hair shaft. It is also important to wash hair at least weekly because product buildup can weigh the hair down. In order to prevent damage from blow dryers and flat irons, be sure to use heat protective sprays and lotions on the hair after washing and before blow drying. Also let the hair dry almost completely before blow drying to reduce heat damage.
