IIMSAM’s official calls upon global leaders to support Spirulina for humanity

Dr. Naseer Homoud said that the FAO estimate on world hunger is alarming and an eye opener for all social and humanitarian organizations to know what actually are being done to stop annihilation of humanity.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Jun 22, 2009 – Doha: Dr. Naseer Shahir Homoud, Regional Director (Middle East) and Goodwill Ambassador for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, has appealed to the world leaders to promote the use of super food Micro Algae Spirulina to fight with world hunger and food instability.

Reacting on United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recent estimates that World hunger is estimated to reach an unprecedented high in 2009 with 1,020 million people going hungry every day, Dr. Naseer Homoud said that the estimate is alarming and an eye opener for all social and humanitarian organizations to know what actually are being done to stop annihilation of humanity.

He said that in various parts of the world people are sleeping without food while at the same time, food waste is on the rise. He further said that super food Spirulina may be helpful to save the life of poor peoples in poor countries who have no food to eat. He said that all affected countries should promote Spirulina to fight with world hunger.

Highlighting the efforts taken by IIMSAM to combat hunger problem especially in African countries, Dr. Naseer said that cultivation of Spirulina is the demand of the time so that hunger and malnutrition could be overcome.

He said that the problem of hunger and severe malnutrition can be easily resolved. We have resources but the political will is only lacking. He also said that IIMSAM needs support and the resources necessary to extend its reach in saving more lives in Africa, Asia, Central America and other hunger and malnutrition- affected region.

FAO said that the recent increase in hunger has been caused by the world economic crisis that has resulted in lower incomes and increased unemployment. This has reduced access to food for the poor.

He said that global financial slowdown and high food prices have multiplied the problem of hunger, poverty and simultaneously malnutrition.

He added that the surging number of hunger and poverty cases affecting a major chunk of humanity may result in serious peace and security problem. World leaders must make a global alliance and necessary action plans to deal with this emergent humanitarian crisis.
Compared with last year, there are 100 million more people who are hungry, meaning they consume fewer than 1,800 calories a day, the FAO has been quoted as saying.

The world's most populous region, Asia and the Pacific, has the largest number of hungry people — 642 million, up 10.5 percent from last year. Sub-Saharan Africa registers 265 million undernourished, an 11.8 percent increase. Even in the developed world, undernourishment is a growing concern, with 15 million in all and a 15.4 percent increase, the sharpest rise around the world, FAO said.

He further said that Spirulina is one of the beautiful gifts from the nature since the existence of life on earth. Highlighting the features of the Micro Algae Spirulina, he said that these blue - green algae which has many other non- pharmaceutical means, has proved to be a very promising alternative option in the treatment of multiple health disorders as it strengthens the complete immune system.

He also said that Spirulina is one of the super foods on this earth. He added that the given algae are one of the oldest life forms on Earth, which billions of years ago produced the oxygen in our atmosphere so that other life forms could appear. Amazingly, Spirulina has remained till our days and this super food is a Nature’s boon to poorer who could not afford rich and nutritious foods.
