Hunderds of the worlds best athletes at this year's Masters West Region Championship, held at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, California, were supported on the field by Dr. Scott Neubauer of Coastal Health and Fitness.

The weekend's events served as a qualifier for this year's National Championships, to be held July 9-12 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Competitors at this year's event came from all over the country representing dozens of track clubs.  Competitors at the event included former NFL receiver and coach James Lofton and bronze medalist Willie Gault.

Dr. Neubauer reported that this was his second USATF event that he has volunteered for this season. "I love to support the running community however I can." Asked how the athletes faired physically at the event, Dr. Neubauer stated "Thankfully we had no life-threathening injuries this year. But the cold weather brought an increase of strains and sprains." Rain fell on the athletic stadium several times on Saturday, but the events went on as scheduled.

At numerous occasions during the meet, competitors pulled up injured and hobbling from their event, limped over to the first aid station managed by Dr. Neubauer and sought treatment. "It's a pretty constant flow of people" at a track and field event. "Nearly every athlete here is familiar with Active Release Technique® and knows how much it helps them."

We spoke to Glenn, a 1500m runner who waited in line for 45 minutes to be treated by Dr. Neubauer. "I knew my hamstring would be a problem. Dr. Scott worked on me at a track meet a year ago, and I felt fantastic for  months. If I have to wait another hour, it's worth it."

We caught up with Glenn a few hours later at  the finish of the 800m race. He had several strips of dark blue KinesioTape® running down his leg. Still breathing heavily from his race around the track, he stated "I can't believe I just ran that race without any pain. Two hours ago I could barely walk. Then Dr. Scott did ART and taped me. I wish he could be at all of our meets."

When asked what other events he plans to work this year, Dr. Neubauer replied "Not too many. I'll be at Ironman Arizona, probably at Ironman Hawaii and maybe a few paddleboard races. Otherwise, the rest of the summer I get to compete rather than treat. My next race is a 15 mile paddleboard race from Encinitas to Windansea."
