BGMC's Heart Center of Excellence has High-Tech Tools for Faster, Precise Heart Proced

Patient receives the first procedure using CartoSound in Broward County

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Jun 19, 2009 – Ft. Lauderdale, FL – Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologist David Kenigsberg, M.D., successfully performed Broward County’s first CartoSound procedure at Broward General Medical Center’s Heart Center of Excellence.  The recent procedure involved image integration to create bi-directional block and cure atrial flutter in a 50-year-old man.

CartoSound Image Integration Software Module with the SoundStar 3-D ultrasound catheter is a new system that aids electrophysiologists in treating cardiac arrhythmias by offering them a more complete visualization of patients’ hearts.  The module’s superb anatomical detail offers real-time intracardiac echocardiography ultrasound images that allow doctors to clearly see scar tissue, identify the region from where the arrhythmia originates and perform ablations while observing the catheter-tissue contact live — all of which are critical factors in the success of these delicate procedures.

"This novel and innovative system will improve our ability as electrophysiologists to ablate complex cardiac arrhythmias," said Kenigsberg. "The module’s enhanced visualization offers safer, more effective and quicker treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. It shortens procedure times by allowing us to more precisely perform cardiac ablation."

This new technology is makings its debut across the country and is novel in South Florida. Broward General Medical Center’s Heart Center of Excellence is the only hospital offering CartoSound in Broward County.

Kenigsberg received his medical degree at the University of Miami. He completed his residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, cardiology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan and electrophysiology fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. His private practice specializes in the diagnosis and ablation of arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia and the implantation of devices including cardiac monitors, pacemakers and defibrillators. Kenigsberg has been on the medical staff at Broward General since 2007.

Broward Health, providing service for more than 50 years, is a nationally recognized system offering world-class health care services to our neighbors in South Florida. One of the 10 largest public health systems in the nation, Broward Health includes Broward General Medical Center, North Broward Medical Center, Imperial Point Medical Center, Coral Springs Medical Center, Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, Broward Health Weston and more than 30 facilities of the Community Health Services and Broward Health Physician Group.
