June 19, 2009 - PRLog -- Chipped windscreens are not only unsightly, if impairing a drivers vision they can also be extremely dangerous, but despite this, many motorists are failing to get them repaired and as Gareth Kilburn at Autoglaze outlines, this is extremely risky especially as windscreen chips can usually be repaired free of charge under your insurance policy leaving your no claims unaffected. Here, Gareth answers some of the most common questions encountered by customers who bring their cars into them for windscreen repair.

How does windscreen repair work?

When a customer brings a car into us for windscreen repair, we inject a hard, clear plastic resin into the chip under high pressure, and then work to burnish and polish the resin so that it is flush with the windscreen. This works to seal and repair the area in question.

I am concerned that my windscreen chip is too big to be repaired.  How can I tell if it needs repairing entirely?

Here at Autoglaze we will always try to repair your existing windscreen before replacing it with a new one, saving you both time and money.   Whether it can be repaired, obviously depends on the size of the crack and where it is located on the windscreen.  Your windscreen is separated into zones, where repairs can be successfully carried out, the general rule is that if the windscreen crack is in the driver’s vision, it can be repaired as long as the area concerned is less than 10mm.  Usually if the chip is larger than this, there are more than three repairs on the windscreen if the repairs are less than 100mm apart, it will have to be replaced.  I would suggest contacting a professional to be sure of your situation.

What happens if I have a cracked windscreen and my insurance company suggests a firm, I do not want to use?

You are under no legal obligation to use the nominated supplier as outlined in your insurance policy. Insurers will often negotiate special discounts for windscreen replacements and have billing arrangements secured. Many insurance companies, will have members of staff from a windscreen repair firm working in their call centres, often known as, ‘glass help lines’, so if you are keen to get an impartial firm in to repair your windscreen, you are fully entitled to do so.

What should I bear in mind if I decide to find my own windscreen repair firm?

Always make sure that you hire a certified windscreen installer to do the work.  If they are unable to repair the windscreen chip, then make sure that you find out what type of warranty the installer offers on their windscreen replacement service.  You should also
check any policy excess that needs to be deducted.
