Robert Verdi's new show a boon for older women, says Models Direct

Managing Director of Models Direct, Damian O'Connor, says that many women assume that if you haven't started your modelling career in your twenties, then it's too late. “In fact, there are plenty of opportunities for women of all ages who want to work as a model,” says O'Connor. “Clients often come to us to (http://www.modelsdirect.com/find_a_model/index.html) find a model of a particular age for a photo shoot. Depending on the campaign or the product, they are often looking for older women.”

Now, the return of modelling reality TV show She's Got The Look looks set to raise the profile of older models once again. On the show, the brain child of celebrity stylist Robert Verdi, all the model contestants are over the age of 35.

Says Verdi, the older contestants on the show create far more entertaining television than the typical contestants on other modelling reality TV shows.

“We found that the [potential contestants] had developed lives that were substantive and textured,” says Verdi. “Many of them had a family or a spouse or they were divorced and they’d had several incarnations in terms of their careers, so they just have a lot more substance than a very young girl who wants to pursue a career as a model.”

According to O'Connor, this experience also means that older women are often better able to deliver what clients need on a modelling shoot than their younger counterparts. “There's just no substitute for real life experience when you're working on set with a tight deadline and an anxious client hovering in the background,” he says.
