Jun 18, 2009 – News 12 Long Island won 25 awards in 10 separate categories when the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI), the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, announced the winners of its 2009 Media Awards contest at its annual awards dinner on June 4, 2009. The 24-hour local television news network came away with top honors for reporting in Deadline News; Non-Deadline News; Feature; Business/Economic/ Financial; Environment/Science/Technology; Arts; Sports; Public Affairs; and Outstanding TV Photojournalist.
Also receiving special recognition was News 12 Long Island News Director Patrick F. Dolan, who received the 2009 Outstanding Long Island Journalist Award for achievement over his career. The award is PCLI’s highest honor to an individual. In presenting the award, Press Club of Long Island President John O’Connell stated, “Over his career as News 12’s commander-in-chief, Patrick has displayed tremendous dedication to quality local journalism, to Long Island, and to the issues that help shape our lives.”
At the event, longtime News 12 Long Island anchor Doug Geed presented the News 12 Long Island/Hank Logeman High School Journalism Award to Bay Shore High School student Jillian Ferraro. The award carries a $2,000 college scholarship and was named in honor of the late UPI reporter who was a mentor to many young journalists.
The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism organization, with 60 pro chapters and 250 student chapters nationwide. SPJ is dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.
