June 17, 2009 - PRLog -- Ravi Sankar Ippili represented the team AUTOMIZED MINDS from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India at ROBOGAMES 2009, held at Fort Mason, San Francisco, USA. The team consists of two students Ravi Sankar Ippili and Uttam Grandhi. The team has built 3 robots and bagged a Silver Medal and a Bronze Medal.

The first robot, MICHELANGELO clinched a Silver Medal. Michelangelo sketches the portraits of people when provided with the drawings of the image in Portable Grey Map Format. The unique algorithm scans for all the dots in the image and gives the sequence of dots to form a continuous line. Then an inverse kinematics algorithm is used to determine the angles of the actuators. These angles are further transformed into motor angles. These angles are the desired goal positions of the actuators. Then an instruction packet is constructed encapsulating the goal positions and the speeds of the actuators. This robot is computer controlled and the actuators have an efficient feedback inbuilt in them. The programming was entirely done in Microsoft Visual C++ and data processing was done in Microsoft Excel. The brackets of the bot were modeled in Pro-E and 3D printed in FDM machine, available in Flexible Manufacturing Systems, BITS-pilani. This basic prototype for this robot was developed as a lab oriented project guided by Dr. B K Rout, BITS-pilani.

The  Second robot, CYBORG, bagged a Bronze medal. It is a sculpture fabricated to resemble a half human- half robot creature. The robot is in pensive mood and musing about the human to robot transformation in various spheres of life. The entire structure is made out of Sheet metal and Thermocol.

The Third robot is a dancing robot and dances to the song “JAI HO”, composedby the great Indian Music Director A R Rahman. The steps are composed in Visual C++. It resembles an animated character WALL-E of Pixar Animation Studio in some ways. Unfortunately this robot could not make its stand in ROBOGAMES 2009, while it clinched the first prize in IIT Bombay’s TECHFEST held during January 2009.
