Renowned Artist Unveils New Works of Art at Sovereign

June 17, 2009 - PRLog -- ATLANTA –Atlanta-based Regent Partners, LLC, the developer of Sovereign, a 635-foot 50-story mixed-use tower on Peachtree Road in Buckhead, recently unveiled 20 new pieces of art designed and created by internationally acclaimed artist Todd Murphy, the building’s curator.

The artwork, which includes 20 five by ten foot light boxes, was produced by Murphy for the residential art collection throughout the public portion of the luxury high-rise. Murphy originals span the elevator entries of floors 28 through 47, each depicting a metamorphosing segment of a continuous tree and varied specimens of birds, paying tribute to Atlanta’s deep roots and cultural evolution. As curator, Murphy says it is his goal to continue to amaze residents and visitors with unique installations.

“I tried to conceptually connect each floor with the other by creating a virtual tree throughout the building. The bottom image is a root system, the next floor a major trunk and as the building ascends, the images get more branchy and lighter,” said Murphy. “All of the trees have different varieties of birds and the idea is that over time residents and guests will see different aspects of the tree at different times.”

Murphy also procured and implemented Sovereign’s staple art collection in 2008. The collection, which is composed of more than 50 sculptures, photographs and mixed media works, includes dynamic sculptures by equine artist Deborah Butterfield and REM lead singer Michael Stipe.

On the 28th and 29th floor amenity level, a gallery showcases a retrospective of 20th-century fine art photography, which was selected with the help of Jackson Fine Art owner and curator Anna Walker Skillman. The collection features works by famed French photographer Willy Ronis and American photojournalist Elliott Erwitt, as well as contemporary pieces by locals such as Sally Mann, Massimo Vitali and Joel Meyerowitz.

Murphy's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States, Europe and Asia. He has been a visiting artist and lecturer at the University of Georgia, University of California San Francisco, University of Virginia, University of South Carolina and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. His work includes paintings, sculptures, site-specific work and experiential design. He has been a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, private corporations and non-profits. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Mythic Imagination Institute.
