BioSense International, Inc. (BioSense) is excited to announce the sale of a BDS1000 bacterial detection system to the NSF Water Quality Center (WQC) at the University of Arizona (UA).  The equipment will be used at the “Water Village” project, in Tucson, Arizona. Donavon Ostrom, president of BioSense says, “The sale of our first system is a momentous occasion, and reflects the substantive efforts of our scientists and engineers that translated this Arizona State University (ASU) technology from lab to commercial product.  The use of the system in such an important project will provide expert market validation and feedback of our technology in a homeland security application.”

The Water Village project serves to test new technologies designed to monitor the safety of the nation's water supply.  Much of the impetus for the "Water Village" comes from a substantial grant awarded by the Office of Homeland Security and the Environmental Protection Agency.   “It is an exciting platform that deals with emerging issues in water quality monitoring," explains Charles Gerba, a UA professor of soil, water and environmental sciences and one of three principal investigators at the NSF WQC.  Fellow scientist Ian Pepper, lead Professor of the WQC, adds “our efforts include some of the latest technologies available in the market today, and we look forward to integrating the BioSense rapid detection platform for E. coli and HPC bacteria into our protocols.”

BioSense International, Inc. is a Phoenix-based company in the water testing and analytics industry that develops and sells bacterial detection systems and other products used to rapidly detect and identify the presence of harmful bacteria in water.  BioSense products are applicable in water distribution, food and beverage processing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Early detection for homeland security applications is a key market for our products.  Unlike current technologies that can take up to 48 hours to detect and identify harmful bacteria, our BDS1000 takes 15 minutes to detect the presence of bacteria and less than 2 hours to identify the contaminant.  The core technology was developed at the National Science Foundation Water Quality Center at Arizona State University.  ASU continues to support the development of this important technology.
