Fun, Friendship, and Scholarship all but sums up the experience of participating in the Miss Teenage California Scholarship Pageant. Founded in 1980 the event will celebrate its 31st year in 2010, providing thousands in college scholarships and prizes to young girls 13-19 in the Golden State.
What makes the program unique is that the swimsuit competition was eliminated in 1990. The differences in mainstream pageantry do not end there however. The contestants are judged on Achievements & Activities, Personality, and Poise & Appearance in Formal Wear.
The reigning Miss Teenage California is Brittany Chen of Cerritos, CA. She is a lovely 17 year old Asian -American and the daughter of Jeff Chen and Ingrid Huang. A Senior at Gretchen Whitney High School, she served as Class Secretary, and for the past three years has been her schools Varsity Cheer Captain. She is a member of the Chinese American Teach Abroad Program, and an American Red Cross Treasurer. A member of the National Honor Society and AP Scholar confirms that she is more than a pretty face.
In July Brittany will compete in the 2009 Miss Teen Earth-United States Pageant in Nevada. The national pageant will also crown Miss Earth-United States, the young woman who will eventually compete in the Miss Earth Pageant- one of the world's largest pageants for women. The teen division was added last year, and their are plans for a Miss Teen Earth Pageant in the future. The Earth-United States Pageants are to bring envrionmental awareness to the forefront of our culture, by stressing the importance that our environment is in peril. Becoming aware and informed about our environment, the pageant hopes to add a different focus on beauty with a purpose.
The media recently has recently concentrated on the on-going saga with Miss California USA. The public needs to know that all pageants are not the same. Danfranc Productions and the Miss Teenage California Scholarship Pageant are not affliated with the California USA System, or the Miss USA systems. Miss Teenage California is and has been an independent state pageant since it was founded in 1980.
