The New York Giants started the 2008 season looking like they were going to have no problem repeating as Super Bowl Champions, but after their amazing 11-1 start the Giants lost three of their final four games and went limping into the playoffs. The Giants still went into the playoffs with a first round bye, but failed to even score a touchdown in their playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles. A big reason for the Giants struggles to end the 2008 season, was the departure of their star wide receiver Plaxico Burress after a clubbing incident where he shot someone. Even without Burress the Giants figure to be a real a threat in 2009.

With the loss of Burress and long time veteran receiver Amani Toomer, many thought the Giants would go out and try and land a veteran receiver to come in and fill the void, but instead the Giants look to hoping that they can rebuild from within, including their most recent draft picks of Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden. The Giants were also forced to part ways with running back Derrick Ward and safety James Butler. The Giants did bolster up their defensive front with the additions of defensive tackles Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard and linebacker Michael Boley, plus the Giants get back star defensive end Osi Umenyiora who missed all of 2008 with a knee injury.
