Millvina Dean, the last surviving passenger from the Titanic who died recently, was planning to go on a 100th anniversary memorial cruise back across the Atlantic in 2012.
Just days before she died Millvina met with travel agent Miles Morgan and arranged to have a cabin on the Titanic Memorial Cruise, which will sail to the site of the Titanic on the 100th anniversary of its sinking.
Millvina’s father Bertram died on the Titanic after helping her mother Georgetta, two year old brother Ben and baby Milvina into life rafts to ensure their survival.
Said Miles Morgan: “Millvina was enthusiastic about the cruise and bright as a button during our two meetings over the last few weeks. She was keen to talk about the Titanic and it is sad that such a wonderful character has passed away.
“She realised that she may not be able to go on the cruise herself and we discussed a plan if she was not fit to travel. Typical of her she was keen for the cabin to be made available to one of her carers in the nursing home and that is what we shall do.
“It effectively means that one of her carers will be able to cruise on the Fred.Olsen liner Balmoral from Southampton and follow the route of the Titanic and be above the wreck on the 100th anniversary for a special ceremony. The cruise will also visit the Titanic cemeteries in Halifax, Nova Scotia where victims are remembered before continuing on to New York.
“Millvina was such a character and I am delighted to have met her. We discussed at some length helping her “Millvina fund” and I have already contacted the organiser to see how our cruise can contribute in some way to give her the lasting legacy her amazing life deserved.”
The Titanic Memorial Cruise ( http://www.titanicmemorialcruise.com ) has been taking bookings for two months and has passengers from all over the world registered to be on board. It is being organised by Miles Morgan Travel, which has chartered the Fred.Olsen liner for the event.
