As with every hospital, the mission of Hospital Dos de Mayo is to medically treat those in need of medical care. There is an HIV project here that needs volunteers, as do other areas of the hospital. This hospital, which is located in an economically depressed area of Lima, relies very much upon volunteers because many of the people that come here do not have enough money for treatment. Religion offers many patients support here, but volunteers do not need to be religious to volunteer
. Volunteers will receive training. Tasks include working with patients and assisting local staff to give medical treatment. The Volunteer Station inside Hospital Dos De Mayo is working under the careful conduction of Brother Douglas, an American volunteer who came to Perú 25 years ago and works with other volunteers assisting mainly HIV terminal patientes and HIV/Tuberculosis patientes in the hospital. Underfunded and lacking adequate manpower Brother Douglas has been running this volunteer program on a shoestring for years and any helping hands is welcome.
Volunteers can assist by doing the following tasks: Work as part of a team of local and international volunteers in managing the delivery of basic medicine to terminal HIV patients. Also counselling HIV and Tuberculosis patients, keeping the patients comfortable. At times you may feel like you could be of more use, however your cheerful presense amid these terminal cases is sometimes the best medication. However benign this volunteer opportunity appears, understand that your presence here is a valuable one. Further please understand that some of patients you will become close with may pass during your tenure with Brother Douglas Volunteers must be of age 20 or above with minimum education of undergraduation.
