Raw and real, the new single by Andy J Gallagher, ‘Faster & Faster’ which is released on July 13th 2009, is so infectiously whirlwind that its accompanying video needed the BBC’s Top Gear team to capture the action: director, cameramen, stunt drivers and all. This track is the antidote for anyone left numb by the sequential sterility spoon-fed by today’s homogenized music industry, a pure adrenaline anthem for the lads and lasses that inevitably leaves you wanting more and more.
“The video is just like an old fashioned heist in a seventies police drama,” laughs Andy. “Me and a few boys with stockings on our heads jump into a getaway car after doing a job. I’m driving, holding a pink fluffy steering wheel, chased by the cops. I couldn’t keep my foot off the accelerator. When that blue light is flashing in your mirror, you really want to boot it as fast as you can.”
With the Top Gear crew driving the video production, fans of the show have thrown the rumour mill in full throttle about a cameo by the elusive Stig, the show’s mysterious racer. “If you believe the internet forums,” says Andy, “then the Stig was one of the two stunt drivers in the video, my double. If they’re right, then I guess that the Stig’s my stunt double and I’m his face model!”
The song sees three no-hopers, a pole-dancer, a junkie and a jailbird turn their lives around by the end of the record, making Faster & Faster an upbeat rollercoaster you just want to ride again and again. Luckily for those affected by Andy’s new single and video, the highly anticipated debut album is revving up right around the corner. ‘Helicopter Dolphin Submarine’ marks a milestone not just for Andy, but possibly a punk rock renaissance, and follows in the trail of Faster & Faster. Produced by The Damned foreman Roman Jugg—who calls Gallagher a “Lyrical Genius”—the album is an irresistible journey as well as a new departure point, and not knowing where you’re going is half the fun.
