PR Log (Press Release) –
Jun 11, 2009 – ATLANTA, GA. – Voting is underway at www.peopleallstars.com in the campaign honoring community leaders across the U.S. at the 2009 Major League All-Star game. Three finalists are from Georgia in the campaign sponsored by People magazine, Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Braves.
One Peachtree City man who launched a website to take requests for care packages from troops in Iraq and Afghanistan is in the running for People Magazine's “All Stars Among Us” contest. Ryan Housely is the driving force behind HeroBox a non-profit that started simply by Ryan sending care packages to his brother, US Army Specialist Evan Housely. Ryan put up a simple web page to note special requests from Evan and other soldiers in his brother’s unit. One unit has now turned into 2500 soldiers requesting custom care packages from HeroBox while deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. While his work has already earned him recognition locally, it is now getting some national attention. Housely's efforts have earned him a top spot in People magazine's All Stars Among Us contest, which honors "individuals who have gone above and beyond to serve their community," according to People's Web site. HeroBox, is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the troops by sending custom care packages to deployed men and women overseas that are customized to each person’s specific request. With 52,000 U.S. Troops currently deployed to Afghanistan and the number rising to 68,000 by the end of the year, soldiers are still in need of feeling support and love from American civilians they’re protecting. For more information about HeroBox visit www.herobox.org. Voting started June 8th at www.peopleallstars.com and continues until June 24th. Finalists are categorized by Major League Baseball teams. There are three finalists representing each team and the top vote getter from each team will attend and be honored at the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. One person will be featured in People magazine. Ryan's profile can be found by clicking on the Atlanta Braves logo on the contest's website.
