Experts Warn That Plan to Take “Conscience Protections” Away From Medical Professionals Is Grave Threat to All Americans



Fort Lauderdale, FL (June 11, 2009) –The Coral Ridge Hour warns on June 14 that the Obama administration’s plan to strip healthcare professionals of “conscience protection rights” will force medical workers to take part in procedures, such as abortion, that go against their consciences. “It would mean that if an individual goes to get contraception or if a woman goes to a hospital and a doctor says, ‘Well, it’s against my conscience to perform an abortion,’ they [the doctor] will be forced to do it,” says Tewannah Aman, a pro-life leader in South Florida.



A survey of Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) members found that over 40 percent are already being pressured to provide medical services that conflict with their convictions.



“If they [the government] can walk into a doctor’s office or force a nurse or pharmacist to violate their conscience, then no one’s conscience protections are worth anything in this country,” Dr. David Stephens, chief executive officer of CMDA, says on the program. “They can walk into your place of business, or they can walk into your home and tell you what you have to believe and what you have to do.”



He adds, “To the degree that the state demands that you surrender your conscience to them . . . and only do the things that are sanctioned by the state, the government becomes totalitarian. It becomes a dictatorship.”
