The 'add to the cart' process leaves to many openings for mistakes. The amount of time the process takes from start to finish depends on the customer. A customer who has a finished manuscript and layout will go through a quicker process than someone who only has a working manuscript. It might take a bit longer but in the end the customer will receive a bookstore quality book. The early stages of a book or project consists of talking with the customer and receiving their manuscript. From there it is proofread, edited and sent back to the author for revising. Meanwhile the graphics department will begin working on the cover design and layout. Once the manuscript is revised and free of errors and the cover design meets the author's approval, they are both sent off to the printer. For electronic books, the process is done once the manuscript and design are finished. Pricing is based on editing, graphics design, and ISBN assignment. The cost is lumped together in a quote that is usually paid in half at the beginning of the process and the rest paid in full at the time of the book's finish. Books are sent to the customer's choosing with the shipping fees to be paid by the customer. The retail price for the published item is determined by the author. It is suggested that they base the price on their printing costs, the author's margin set by the author, and the fee charged by the distributor for distributed items. Printing costs for books are correlated to the page count, paper size, binding type, and color or black-and-white print. Reprints come at a small cost, consisting mainly of printing, shipping and a small service fee.
