There are many state pageants in California which are primarily "beauty contests" that exist only for the promotion of beauty. In 1980 the Miss Teenage California Scholarship Pageant was formed. Although being attractive and fit is a prerequesite for Miss Teenage California, their is no swimsuit competition or talent competition. Candidates are judged in the areas of Achievements & Activities, Personality, and Poise and Appearance in Formal Attire.
Many of the winners of the Miss Teenage California Scholarship Pageant have gone on to successful careers in various fields.
Miss Teenage California 2004, Erin Darling won the pageant at the age of 17. She went on to use her $10,000 in scholarships to continue her education at the University of Southern California. A recent graduate of U.S.C. with a degree in Journalism, she is now employed with a popular television show conducting interviews and living her dream.
Miss Teenage California 1999, Ellen Chapman used her scholarship funds earned at Miss Teenage California at Sonoma State University. She graduated with a degree in Education and now is a full-time school teacher.
Miss Teenage California 2002, Tara Sanders used her scholarship funds earned at Miss Teenage California to attend the University of Redlands and Chico State University, where she recently atained her Masters Degree.
Miss Teenage California 1998, Natalie Arena used her scholarship funds to attend the University of California and now is a full time news anchor in Virginia.
The success stories are endless for Miss Teenage California winners, but also for the many runners up and contestants who have competed in the program since 1980.
