Film-making and animation over the last ten years has come a long way, primarily as a result of more film-makers opting to produce films in 2D. This has arguably been a very successful technique, with many of these films grossing millions of dollars. Take, for example, Shrek 2, which was released in 2004 and is the top-grossing animated film, reaching over 440 million dollars.
One significant piece of software has been absolutely essential in the development of 2d animation in long-form features. Autodesk Maya was developed in the late 90s (albeit by different developers) during the production of Disney feature animation Dinosaur. Autodesk acquired the software in 2006.
Now, DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda and upcoming film Monsters vs. Aliens, has developed “a whole new pipeline around stereoscopic films”, in which Autodesk Maya software will be involved – the studio did collaborate with Autodesk to develop a camera module for Maya that is being used in Monsters vs. Aliens project.
Debi Peppin, Director at CADline, specialist providers of Autodesk software, AutoCAD training and autoCAD software, said “One of the main features of Autodesk Maya is the element of control the user receives and therefore has over key processes, such as polygon modelling and UV texturing. The software consists of powerful selection management features, efficient modelling workflows and precision UV unfolding and layout options, all of which are again in place to give user ultimate control of their project.”
Debi added, “This software is frequently used by the film and animation industries, highlighting just how significant it is, particularly from a business perspective. In addition to this, Autodesk Maya has also been recognised by industry professionals and organisations – for example, it received the Award for Innovation in Media from the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in 2006 and even an Academy Award in 2003.”
