Diabetes: From the Inside-Out

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Jun 09, 2009 – Diabetes mellitus is a manifestation of a dysfunctional metabolism and is commonly attributed to a combination of hereditary and environmental causes, resulting in abnormally high blood sugar levels. This disease often leads to several complications when diagnosis come after its onset. A recent study presented at the American Association of Diabetes annual meeting in New Orleans explains that the process leading to type 2 diabetes take place even before the full onset of the disease.

Among the factors that lead to the onset of diabetes are overeating, excessive weight and lack of physical activity and, according to the study, changes to blood glucose and insulin sensitivity. The research also takes a deeper look at the connection between diabetes and depression. Treatment of depression improves insulin resistance in a diabetic at risk for type 2 diabetes and findings suggest that depression is a direct risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Depression treatments may protect against the disease.

As of 2007, there are 23.6 million people in the United States, or 8% of the population, who have diabetes. Data from the National Diabetes Statistics indicate that the total prevalence of diabetes increased 13.5% from 2005-2007. This means that more and more people are thrust into the challenge of dealing with the disease.

Although there have been many published books on the management of diabetes mellitus by providing dietary, as well as medication and exercise information for diabetics, few offer insight to what really happens behind the scenes. Author and career nurse, Silvia I. Almanza, gives persons with diabetes a more comprehensive look at the inner workings of the disease in her self published book, Diabetes: From the Inside-Out: My Little Book on Diabetes.

"Diabetes is a topic that has been part of my career since I was a student nurse. I have been involved with the diabetes education of many people. There are many good books by professionals that help with the management of diabetes mellitus by providing dietary information as well as medication and exercise information. I want to provide information from a little different perspective: that which may help the individual learn what is going on inside their body," Almanza says of her book.

This Xlibris published book is the summation of Almanza's knowledge in diabetes education and track record in treating patients with the disease. Having been a career nurse with extensive experience, she focuses on the human body and how it reacts to diabetes in order to give diabetics more comprehension of what goes on when diabetes strikes. "I believe that if people understand what is going on inside their body, then they will be able to interpret some valuable information. Our magnificent body is always trying to help us. If we listen, then maybe we will learn how to help ourselves."

Diabetes: From the Inside-Out is an indispensable tool for better management and treatment of diabetes, whether one has just recently been diagnosed or have been living with it for years.
