Chicago -- June 8, 2009 --, Chet Spiewak spends his days servicing and maintaining printing, scanning and networking equipment.  Much like a superhero, his nights are filled with villainous plots, daring adventure and courageous rescues.  Spiewak illustrates, writes, and publishes the Vinny the Bug Man series.  Inspired by the movie Toy Story, Spiewak purchased 3D software and taught himself how to design computer generated illustrations (CGI).  The second volume in the Vinny the Bug Man: Our Liberator Returns is due to be published in September 2009 (CWS Studios, Inc., Paperback, $7.95; ISBN-13: 978-0-9785827-2-2; 80 pages).

Graphic novels for kids are a growing category in children’s publishing.  Librarians and teachers have known for years that the use of graphic novels can help reluctant readers, especially boys, learn to love reading.  The bestselling Wimpy Kid and Bone series have only increased the popularity of the genre.  A panel entitled “Tapping Into the Growing Market for Graphic Novels” was devoted to the subject at the 2008 BookExpo.  Booksellers should never dismiss the self-published graphic novelist.  Jessica Stockton Bagnulo, graphic novels buyer and author events coordinator at McNally Robinson Booksellers in New York City, participated on the panel and was quoted by Bookselling This Week as saying, “Self-published comics are where you can find some of the best indie comics.”

Spiewak describes how the idea for Vinny grew: “Vinny the Bug Man was really developed as a concept for a video game shooter starring an accidentally-shrunken exterminator trapped in an insect world.  After designing storyboards, characters and worlds, I soon realized that Vinny the Bug Man was a story that needed to be told.  I chose the graphic novel format because it could capture the look and feel of the adventure.”  In Vinny the Bug Man: Our Liberator Returns, Vinny must find the Whimsical Seed of Knowledge to save Mushroom City from an ant invasion.

Chet Spiewak is the founder of CWS Studios (www.cws-studios.com) and the author/illustrator of Vinny The Bug Man: The Journey Begins; Vinny The Bug Man: Our Liberator Returns; An Ornaments’ Tale, and the illustrator of The adventures of Monbarsgold.  He lives in Chicago, IL.  For more information on Vinny The Bug Man: Our Liberator Returns, go to www.bugem.com.  Consumers can purchase books through Barnes & Noble, Borders, Amazon, www.3Dstorybooks.com and other local booksellers.  Retailers can order books through BMI, Baker & Taylor and other major wholesalers.
