VA Medical Center Emergency Department Nurses, along with Granite/Faith and Salisbury Police and Fire Departments will partner with Rowan Regional Medical Center and churches to hold the first annual Safety fair for kids on Saturday, June 20, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Granite Lake Park in Granite Quarry. The objective for the safety fair is to increase safety awareness and prevention, while providing fun activities, games and prizes.
All members of the surrounding communities are invited to come and participate in a wide variety of safety lessons, to include: traffic safety, gun safety, bike helmet usage, anti-gang discussions, car seat safety, first aid, proper hand washing, and CPR. There will also be fun activities, games, and prizes for the entire family. Parents are encouraged to attend and bring all children and youth up to age 18.
The event will feature presenters addressing safety and health issues that are common for parents and children. Participating organizations include: Granite Quarry Police, Salisbury Police, Rowan County EMS and Rescue Squad, Granite Quarry Fire Department, VA Nurses, Rowan Regional Hospital, Rowan County Parks and Recreation, Lowe’s Home Improvement, and many other local health providers, dental care, and child care experts.

Granite Lake Park opened in June 2007 and consists of paved walking trails, a shelter with bathrooms, a playground area, a lake covering an acre with two piers, fish, and the Granite Lake Ducks. The park is located on North Salisbury Avenue (Hwy 52) across from Kerns Street and is open from 6am until 10pm.
