SWA’s chapter at Azerbaijan State Economic University has successfully launched the Azerbaijan Internet Radio Project of Youth. The project was implemented in April as a way to engage the youth in political activism through music. The radio project plays mainly rock and hip hop music, available locally and through the internet. The music selected tends to be songs with political messages promoting free speech and democracy, to encourage the youth to become active agents in their countries political future.
The members of the SWA Azerbaijan Radio Project of Youth are planning on incorporating programs dealing with education and youth along with broadcasting music. The President of Azerbaijan Radio, Murad I. Gasmov said, “We wanted to create an alternative media on public radio that would allow us to give information to the youth and citizens of Azerbijan.” The Internet Radio Project currently operates out of an office in Baku. The SWA chapter works with the “Dalga Youth Movement”, on one computer to run the operation. Among their supporters are IRadio, an interactive internet site that broadcasts radio station around the world, and Yer.az hosting Provider Company
The founders of the project have plans to expand the operation. They are seeking funding to buy technological equipment in Azerbaijan and abroad. The members of SWA Azerbaijan are working hard to ensure that the radio station succeeds as an outlet for Azerbaijan’s youth. The project has been gaining support through Facebook and word of mouth.
