On February 24 2009, SWA hosted a Rock for Rights benefit concert featuring Hypernova at Fat Baby, a music venue on the lower east side of New York City. With the help of co-sponsors Stoli Vodka, Sailor Jerry Rum and Guru Energy Drinks, and a performance by indie rock band Hypernova, the event raised over $2,400 to benefit the expansion of SWA and support its chapters around the world.
“Rock for Rights” had a turnout of over 140 students and SWA members in the New York City area, offering SWA New York members a chance to reconnect. The highlight of the night for many was the live performance by indie rock band Hypernova. The indie rock band sang over 12 songs from their album “Through the Chaos.”
“The music and crowd created a high energy atmosphere and contributed to making “Rock for Rights” SWA’s most successful fundraiser to date. The night was a celebration of SWA's continuing successes in supporting its global membership and advocating youth activism world-wide.
The Chairman of the Board, Dr. Reza Fakari, thanked sponsors for supporting the SWA cause and greeted everyone, letting them know his appreciation for coming out on a Tuesday night.
