Taking The Arts To A Virtual World

NEW YORK – In a design studio in Portugal, a complete recreation of Lisbon’s Royal Opera House, destroyed by the Great Earthquake of 1755, has taken shape again. Part of an exploration of virtual worlds, archaeology, and cultural heritage, the Opera House was designed by Beta Technologies, which has offices in New York and several European cities.
   Much of Beta Technologies’ work is for the virtual world of Second Life®, which presents enticing opportunities for audiences to experience architecture, art, and design in 3D. Music and dance gain new enthusiasts in its simulated environments. Nonprofits are holding fund-raisers there. And arts organizations, much like global companies IBM and Northrop Grumman, are using Second Life for holding business meetings and interacting with various constituencies. From  networking to learning opportunities, all the benefits of meeting face-to-face are real though the environment is virtual.

   In announcing the Gold Solution Provider Program, Linden Lab stated, “We are excited about taking this step to recognize the excellence and experience and provide further support of Solution Providers operating on the Second Life Grid.”
