As the dreaded recession really starts to kick in and our pockets grow even
tighter, the idea of buying that jacket you had your eye on seems that little bit less
tempting. Of course there is nothing wrong with a little retail therapy, but with the
current economic climate it could be worth finding a new, credit crunch busting
way to get hold of your clothes. Enter CovertCandy, a brand new online clothing
exchange community tailored towards those that care about their style. Launched
on the 4th of January 2009, the site already has close to 3500 users. The concept
is simple - upload items of clothing that you no longer want or need onto the site
and pass them on to other like minded users for credits. You then search the
virtual wardrobes of other users, purchasing items that take your fancy with the
credits that you have earned. This innovative approach to online clothing
exchange means that you can get the clothes you want for free.
CovertCandy differentiates itself from ‘swap style’ sites with its unique credit
system approach. Where other sites require a one on one exchange, CovertCandy
does not. This proud to be British website aims to bring together those with a love
for fashion, creating networks of friends with similar tastes and lifestyles. The
website is the brainchild of four young talents - business graduate Harry Follett,
up and coming graphic designer Jack Featherstone, IT whizz kid Jamie Evans and
yachtmaster Matthew Kotze. All under the age of 25, the website has been
designed with their peers in mind, from it’s refreshingly simple design to it’s social
networking capabilities.
“We felt there was a gap in the market. There was nothing out there that appealed
to young creative people like us, who wanted an alternative way to get their
clothes online. CovertCandy does something about this. This is also absolutely
the right time economically to launch a concept like this.” says
Harry Follett.
CovertCandy provides an alternative to the cheap throwaway fashion that fuels
enviromental and social problems. By exchanging clothes on CovertCandy, users
can help reduce the strain that the clothing industry has on this planet.
With 11 million people intending to use swapping websites in the new year
according to a poll conducted by ICM for broadband provider Talk Talk, Covert-
Candy could be a clothing revolution waiting to happen. Check out
