Healthy curves are back, says Models Direct

These days, it's not only high profile magazines like Sports Illustrated that are looking for models with eye-catching curves to grace their covers.

Bristol, UK - These days, it's not only high profile magazines like Sports Illustrated that are looking for models with eye-catching curves to grace their covers.

According to Damian O'Connor, Managing Director of (http://www.modelsdirect.com) Models Direct, more and more advertisers are trying to find models with fuller figures, to reflect the way that real women look. Models Direct is one of the largest modelling agencies in the UK.

“We have many clients coming to us and specifying models who are not waif thin,” says O'Connor. “They want to use images that their customers can relate to, and these days that doesn't mean super skinny models.”

This trend has begun to reach the high profile world of fashion photography too. Leading US title Sports Illustrated is one magazine which selects women, some of them at the very beginning of their modelling careers, who are far from waif-like.

Their swimsuit models may not exactly be everyday women, but, according to Sports Illustrated swimsuit editor Diane Smith, they are always (http://www.modelsdirect.com/client_list.html) looking for models that are “natural beauties with a good, healthy glow.” One thing the magazine shies away from is models that are too thin. Instead, Smith looks for models with good smiles and a nice, sexy shape.

Take Julie Henderson, for example. She is 5'10” and has a 34-24-35 figure. Henderson appeared in Sports Illustrated shortly after becoming a model and has found the magazine's attitude very refreshing.

“They embrace every aspect of you, so you never have issues of feeling insecure with your body,” says Henderson. “They actually like it when you gain weight.”

“I’m a big girl. I built up muscles playing sports as a kid, and they aren’t going away.”

O'Connor for one is pleased by these trends. “I think it's really positive that young people who are thinking of becoming a model have healthy role models to look up to.”
