Unpublished Guy Announces Open Source Fiction Story

Online fiction writing that anyone can rewrite, tweak, and reuse

June 5, 2009 - PRLog -- Today, Unpublished Guy announced the addition of an open source fiction story to its web site. This online writing addition to the web site allows any visitor to contribute to the development of a collaborative fiction story. Visitors can add comments as suggestions for other writers, or they can dive right into the online writing pool and revise, expand, and cut as much as they would like to create a new version. Each version of the story is saved, so writers can also circle back to an earlier online version to rewrite.

“The first version of this story began in an undergraduate fiction workshop,” says Unpublished Guy (http://www.unpublishedguy.com). “The version shared on the web site is one of the revisions, I made while I was in my twenties (read the full quality disclaimer: http://www.unpublishedguy.com/WritingandPublishingFiction/tabid/36/PostID/14/Open-Source-Fiction-Story-Added-to-Web-Site.aspx), so the quality certainly isn’t bestseller or Pulitzer caliber. Of course any best selling writers or Pulitzer award winning authors are encouraged to improve it.”

The online writing of the fiction story is managed through a wiki widget. The widget is not as full featured as a full-blown wikipedia-like wiki, but it is adequate for the collaborative online writing of a single short story of a few thousand words.

The short story is governed by a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license, which has been compared to open source software licenses. Under this license the online writing (the short fiction story) allows others to remix, tweak, and build upon the online writing even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit the original author and license new creations under identical terms. All new fiction stories carry the same license, so any online writing derivatives will also allow commercial use; however, the new content must link back to the original online fiction story.
